IV Iron Infusion
Restore Iron. Recharge Your Life. If you’re feeling run-down, dragging through your days, or noticing your performance slipping but your labs don’t tell the full story—you’re not alone. At our clinic, we believe your body isn’t failing you—it’s speaking. And sometimes the message is: your iron stores need support.

IV iron infusions offer a powerful way to bypass the digestive system, deliver iron where your body can use it, and help you reclaim energy, clarity, and resilience.

Why Consider IV Iron?
-
More direct delivery: Unlike oral supplements, an IV iron infusion delivers iron straight into the bloodstream for faster, more reliable correction of low levels.
-
Improved energy & focus: When iron stores are replenished, many patients feel less fatigue, improved mental sharpness, better mood, and enhanced exercise recovery.
-
Suitable when oral isn’t enough: If you’ve tried iron tablets or creams and still feel off, or experience side-effects like digestive upset and poor absorption, IV might be the next step.
-
Supports root healing: At our clinic, this isn’t just about raising a number. It’s about restoring metabolic, hormone and mitochondrial function so you thrive—just like with our broader naturopathic approach.

Who Might Benefit?
IV iron infusions may be appropriate if you have:
-
Confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia on lab testing (low ferritin, low haemoglobin, low transferrin saturation)
-
Poor response or intolerance to oral iron supplements
-
Conditions that impair absorption (e.g., post-gastric surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease)
-
Chronic blood loss (e.g., heavy menstruation, frequent donation, gastrointestinal sources)
-
Elevated demands for iron (e.g., pregnancy, breastfeeding, high-level athletics) — with appropriate medical oversight
-
Persistent fatigue, brain fog, or low exercise capacity where iron deficiency is part of the picture
In short: when your labs show iron-related issues and you still don’t feel your best, IV iron can be a strategic tool.

What Are The Risks & Considerations?
We believe in full transparency. While IV iron is very safe when delivered by experienced practitioners, it is still a medical treatment—so we’re diligent.
-
You may experience mild side effects: a metallic taste, temporary headache, muscle or joint ache, or flushing at the infusion site.
-
Rarely, infusion site reactions (bruising, soreness) or allergic/hypersensitivity reactions can occur.
-
Iron overload is extremely rare, but we monitor thoroughly through labs and dosing protocols to ensure safety.
-
Because IV iron bypasses digestion, your body’s resources and renal/hepatic function must be assessed beforehand to ensure suitability.
Our goal: deliver the benefit, minimise the risk, and integrate this into a comprehensive treatment plan—not use it as a quick, isolated fix.
What to Expect at Your Visit
-
Initial Consultation & Assessment – We review your health history, energy patterns, lab work (CBC, ferritin, iron studies, renal/hepatic markers) and explore iron as one piece of your broader wellness picture.
-
Pre-Infusion Testing – If your labs are not recent or don’t include the appropriate iron indices, we’ll guide you through getting the right tests so treatment is safe and targeted.
-
Infusion Appointment – The actual IV iron session typically takes around 30-90 minutes (depending on formulation and dose). You’re monitored throughout in our comfortable clinic setting.
-
Recovery & Follow-Up – You’ll rest briefly after the infusion. We schedule follow-up testing (often 4-8 weeks later) to monitor your response, adjust strategy if needed, and integrate supportive lifestyle, nutrition, and metabolic work.
-
Ongoing Integration – We don’t stop at the infusion. As with all our care, we continue to leverage nutrition, lifestyle, hormone balancing, and movement strategies to support your full system’s recovery.

What is Iron and Why is it Important?
Iron is a vital mineral that plays a key role in producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. It is also essential for energy production, brain function, and immune health. The body stores iron in ferritin, a protein that helps maintain adequate levels for future use.
When iron levels are low, it can lead to iron deficiency anemia, causing symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, and weakness. If left untreated, low iron can impact overall health and daily function.
What is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion is a treatment that delivers iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. This method is used for individuals who:
Have low iron stores (ferritin) or anemia that does not improve with oral iron
Cannot tolerate oral iron due to side effects like nausea or constipation
Have conditions that impair iron absorption (e.g., gastrointestinal disorders)
How an Iron Infusion Can Help:
Restores iron levels more efficiently than oral supplements
Improves symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and brain fog
Supports red blood cell production and oxygen transport
Helps maintain overall energy and immune function
What to Expect:
The infusion is administered over 30-90 minutes in a comfortable setting.
Some individuals may need multiple infusions depending on their iron levels and underlying medical condition.
You may experience mild side effects such as flushing, headache, nausea, or temporary discomfort at the IV site.
Most patients notice improvements within a few weeks, but follow-up bloodwork is needed to determine if additional infusions are required.
How to prepare for your infusion and what to expect after:
Before the Infusion:
Ensure you have eaten a light meal or snack.
Stay well-hydrated; drinking water before your infusion is encouraged.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing, especially with sleeves that can be easily rolled up.
Inform us if you have any known allergies or reactions to previous IV medications.
Possible Side Effects During or After the Infusion:
While most people tolerate iron infusions well, some may experience mild side effects. Common side effects include:
A metallic taste in your mouth.
Headache or dizziness.
Mild muscle or joint pain.
Nausea or upset stomach.
Flushing (warmth or redness of the skin).
Itching or rash at the injection site.
Bruising or soreness at the infusion site.
Rare but Possible Risks and Complications:
Though complications are rare, it’s important to be aware of potential risks:
Allergic Reaction: Some patients may experience an allergic reaction to the iron infusion. Signs include swelling, shortness of breath, hives, or a rapid heart rate. This is why the infusion is given slowly, and you are monitored closely during the procedure.
Low Blood Pressure: A sudden drop in blood pressure can occur, causing dizziness or faintness.
Iron Overload: This can occur if the body receives too much iron, though it’s rare and typically occurs with multiple infusions.
Infection: There is a small risk of infection at the IV site.
After the Infusion:
You may feel tired or lightheaded afterward, so it’s best to rest for the remainder of the day.
Continue to drink plenty of water to help your body process the iron.
Bruising or mild discomfort at the IV site is normal and should resolve within a few days.
When to Seek Medical Attention:
If you experience any of the following symptoms after your infusion, please contact Thrive immediately.
Difficulty breathing.
Severe headache or dizziness.
Swelling or redness at the infusion site that worsens over time.
Chest pain or palpitations.
Follow-Up Care:
Depending on your condition, you may require multiple infusions to achieve optimal iron levels. Follow-up blood work will help determine your response to the treatment and whether additional infusions are necessary.

Safety & Standards of IV Vitamin Therapy: Is IV Therapy Safe?
Your safety and comfort are always our top priorities. All intravenous (IV) nutrient therapies are administered by a licensed Naturopathic Doctor with advanced certification in IV therapy and prescribing authority through the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO). Our clinic has also undergone a rigorous inspection process to receive approval from CONO as a designated IV Infusion Therapy facility.
Before beginning treatment, a detailed health assessment and review of recent lab work are completed to ensure IV therapy is both safe and appropriate for your needs. Each formulation is tailored to your health goals, nutrient requirements, and clinical considerations such as kidney function, medications, and G6PD enzyme status when relevant.
We use only pharmaceutical-grade nutrients and sterile, single-use medical supplies. Treatments are prepared and delivered according to Health Canada and CONO safety standards, with continuous monitoring throughout your session to ensure your well-being

I'm Interested! How Do I Get Started with IV Vitamin Therapy?

-
Pre-IV Bloodwork. In order to keep you safe and adhere to the Ontario Naturopathic regulations, routine bloodwork is required (within 12 months) before starting IV Therapy which includes CBC, Creatinine, eGFR (and G6PD if applicable), You may bring bloodwork previously performed by your family doctor or Dr. Misa can order it for you from Lifelabs. The cost of bloodwork may be covered under your extended health benefits.
-
Book an Initial IV Therapy Visit with Dr. Misa. She will review your health goals, perform a physical exam, and discuss which IV formula would be suitable for you. You will receive an IV treatment during the initial visit if your blood work is within normal levels. The appointment takes approximately 60-90 min. during which you can sit back and relax, read a book, sort your photo album, catch up on your favourite podcast, or take a nap!
-
Referrals. If you are a registered health care practitioner and would like to make a referral for your patient to receive IV Therapy, please fill out this form and fax it to our office at (905) 773-5847.
Preparing For Your IV Therapy Appointment

Dress Comfortably. Please wear a shirt that can roll up above your elbow to allow easy access to your arm. IV therapy generally takes about 60-90 minutes so you’ll want to wear something you’ll be comfortable sitting in for that time period.
Hydrate. While it seems counterintuitive to hydrate before a therapy whose entire purpose is to provide you with hydration and nutrients, it’s actually very important to drink plenty of water before your IV therapy session. The more hydrated you are the more easily accessible your veins are, making for a more comfortable treatment. Aim to drink at least 2-3 glasses of water before your appointment.
Have Something to Eat. It’s a good idea to have a high protein snack or meal before your IV (you can also bring something to eat during your IV if you like). Some of the vitamins and minerals can have a temporary blood sugar and blood pressure lowering effect which can cause you to feel a little light-headed, dizzy, nauseous and/or faint during or after your IV if you haven’t eaten.
Get Moving. If we are sedentary right before an IV, our vessels may be more difficult to access. Moving around (if this is physically possible for you) is one of the best things you can do to help ensure a successful treatment.
Avoid Over-The-Counter Medications. If you can, avoid antihistamine and decongestant drugs for 24 hours before your IV. These medications have a constricting effect on your blood vessels which can sometimes make it more challenging to access your veins. The use of Advil or aspirin can increase bruising. If you can’t avoid them, be sure to hydrate, have a snack and move a bit before you get seated.
Allow Yourself Enough Time. Give yourself enough time to arrive so you can relax and use the restroom prior to your treatment.
